Turmeric is a spice that you probably already have in your kitchen cabinet but rarely use. Often used in Thai and Indian cooking, it’s the spice that gives curry its bright orange color. Many cultures use turmeric for centuries because of its healing properties. After finding out about the health benefits of turmeric, you might want to get your jar out of the cabinet.

Reduce Swelling

Turmeric is so good at reducing swelling that some even use it as a home remedy. They mix the spice with water to form a paste, cover the swollen body part and wrap it with a dry cloth. Some studies found that it can reduce inflammation faster than some prescription drugs. Its anti-inflammation properties also make it a good home remedy for bug bites. Sprinkle turmeric directly on the affected spot, or mix with water and apply a paste to the bite.

Prevent Diabetes

Diabetes is a medical condition that reduces the body’s ability to process and break down sugar. Though some receive a diagnosis of diabetes at a young age, the leading cause of Type II diabetes is obesity. If you are at risk of developing diabetes, try taking some turmeric. A recent study found that those who took a turmeric supplement significantly reduced their risk of developing diabetes. Participants in a separate group that did not take the supplements had a higher risk of developing the condition.

Lose More Weight

Taking turmeric or eating foods sprinkled with turmeric can help you lose more weight and stay at a healthy weight. Turmeric helps the body produce more bile, and bile breaks down food faster and helps the body expel waste. You can take turmeric supplements or incorporate into your cooking.  Whether you love a spicy curry, or you prefer foods that are a little milder, you can still get the benefits of turmeric.
