You might find yourself gobbling down a meal in between meetings at work, sneaking in a quick meal on the way home from work or eating quickly before putting the kids to bed at night. Slowing down the pace at which you eat can help you lose a few pounds or more.

The Mind-Stomach Connection

The mind-stomach connection is the reason why you should slow down. Your brain works in tandem with your stomach. As you eat, your brain picks up cues from your stomach that tells it when you’re full. Your brain then registers that you have a full stomach, which makes you put down the fork and walk away from the table. When you eat quickly, your brain doesn’t register when you’re full, which can result in you eating hundreds of calories more than you should. Slowing down your pace lets your brain keep track of the food that you eat and helps it register when you’re full faster.

How to Eat Slowly

Eating slowly might seem impossible when you find yourself pressed for time, but there are a few tips that can help you slow down. When you eat your next meal, keep a glass of water next to your plate. Chew each bite at least 10 times before swallowing, and take a drink of water before reaching for your next bite. Many people find it helpful to put down the fork or spoon too. After taking a bite, place your fork on the table as you chew. The few seconds that it takes to reach for that utensil and take another bite is enough time for your brain to determine if your stomach is full.

Even if you only have a few minutes to eat before your next meeting, you can still take the time to savor your food. Keep in mind that the slower you eat, the faster you can lose weight.
